School Bus Safety Rules of Kerala

  • If a vehicle is used for transporting school children, On School Duty should be written on the bus in Blue letter on White background
  • As per the Rule 151 of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, a school bus should keep a first aid box inside it
  • Every school bus window should be designed with horizontal grills for better safety
  • A fire extinguisher should be there inside a school bus
  • The name and contact details of the school should be displayed anywhere in the bus
  • A reliable lock should be attached to every school bus door
  • There should be sufficient space under the seat for keeping bags of students
  • A bus attendant should be appointed in the bus for taking care of school children
  • Any parent or a school authority should be present inside the bus for ensuring safety standards
  • School authorities should not appoint a driver who is punished for traffic related offences twice in a year
  • A record showing details of school bus students should always be kept inside the bus
  • School buses should be monitored regularly by school authorities
  • Every school bus seat should have at least a width of 265mm and a depth of 350mm
  • School buses should be painted with golden yellow colour
  • Speed limiting device should be installed with a speed limit set at 50km/hr
