It is found that half of school girls face sexual harassment while traveling to and from school.
After a survey conducted by NGO, it was found that 52% of girls experienced leering and staring followed by touching, pinching and groping.
Students in Karnataka, UP, Jharkhand, Bihar, Haryana and Delhi said 47 per cent of such incidents happen during morning hours when they go to school and 48 per cent during their return.
It is confessed by school girls that 52% harassment happens at bus stops and 23% happens within school or college compounds.
An NGO in New Delhi named Breakthrough started an online campaign called #MakeitSafer is introduced to advocate safe and harassment-free journey of young girls between their schools and homes.
This issue was addressed by Breakthrough country director."Sexual harassment has severe ramifications on a girl's life that reflect in communities in the forms of school dropouts, early marriage and also early motherhood. Our 'MakeitSafer' campaign intends to address this problem at large to advocate the safety of girls with the support of local, regional and national stakeholders", said Sonali Khan.
#MakeitSafer campaign is the largest programme against sexual harassment by Breakthrough.
